west african rhythm project
Past
The West African Rhythm Project
was originally founded as a West
African inspired drum troupe on
a misson to give fiery
performances and hands-on drum
clinics. The group was founded by
Mike Rinker, Donna and Michael
Church, Luke Bass, Dan Cheney, and
Amy Cauldwell. Together, they enjoyed success performing and interacting with children and adults at libraries, public schools, community centers, and cultural events throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The common tie between members, besides an obvious love for this style of music, was studying under master drummer Mohamed Kalifa Kamara of Guinea.
Present
About Us
Currently, the West African Rhythm Project has expanded from a single performance troupe into an educational resource center. The performing troupe, the West African Rhythm Project Ensemble, has added dancers to both its performances and hands-on clinics. With the addition of Anna Crocker, traditional dance classes for all ages and levels of experience are now being taught. We look to promote West African music, musicians, and education locally and abroad through partnerships with master drummers, teachers, dancers, and educational and non-profit organizations such as the West Boylston Arts Foundation. We also offer custom built drums with a variety of wood types, rope colors, and individual add-ons available.
Future
The future of the West African Rhythm Project is in the hands of anyone and everyone who wants to get involoved. Drummers, dancers, and artists with a speciality or interest in West Africa are invited and encouraged to contact us and propose new opportunities to work together. Culture is never a static entity, therefore activities, programs, ventures and adventure that further the common knowledge of historical and current West African music, dance, and more are welcome.
